Zero Waste Silicon Valley

Brand Identity and Communications Materials

Continuing our work with the San Jose Conservation Corps, Covive developed a brand identity and communication materials for Zero Waste Silicon Valley, a new program providing waste diversion, recycling, education, and outreach for businesses and the community in Santa Clara County.

Brand Identity

Covive has assisted with brand development for the San Jose Conservation Corps, and a sister program, Zero Waste East Side. For this new program, Covive drew on fonts and a color palette established for the other identities, pulling out the yellow / marigold gradient as the primary brand color, with black and gray as supporting colors. The ‘zero’ wedge triangle represents waste reduction, while the internal arc represents resilience, sunshine, and hope. The sharpness of the brand intentionally serves to demonstrate professionalism, accuracy, and technological precision, appropriate for the Silicon Valley market.

Event Tent and Table Skirt

Community outreach and education is one of the core functions of the program. Receiving grant money to provide outreach specifically around used oil recycling and proper disposal, the Corps staffs outreach tents near boating marinas and community events to distribute materials, answer questions, and provide resources. Artwork for the tent canopy provides general Zero Waste Silicon Valley branding and web address, while custom table skirts can highlight specific events such as used oil outreach.

Used Oil Outreach Materials

A brand within a brand, the Used Oil Outreach Team logo incorporates a drippy oil illustration with all lowercase lettering. The marigold and black color combination is highly visible, draws attention, and uses the solid black lettering and illustration in a bold and somewhat playful way to serve as a conversation starter. Covive designed decals, t-shirts, and tote bags which can be used for outreach events.

Recycling Event Drop-off Signs

As a part of the Zero Waste Silicon Valley program, the San Jose Conservation Corps hosts regular recycling drop-off drives. Particularly during the pandemic, clear procedures were required for safe and efficient operations. Covive designed a-frame insert directional and instructional signs to guide vehicles during these events. The marigold and black color combination, simple iconography, and bold typography lend themselves to this cohesive and effective sign program.

Website

Covive designed and developed a new website for Zero Waste Silicon Valley. The website was designed to be professional (attracting business customers); informational (providing useful resources for waste diversion and recycling); and mission-driven (highlighting the job training and personal development co-benefits of the Corps’ programs). Clean and simple navigation; clear calls to action; a bold, recognizable color palette; authentic photography; and playful icons all work together to make the website easy to use and visually impactful. Built on the Drupal 8 content management system, the site is designed to allow staff to make regular edits and updates. The site is fully responsive to look and function great on mobile devices, tablets, and desktop devices.

Another aspect of the organization’s work is residential and business e-waste pick-up drives. Covive designed a door hanger flyer that can be distributed in advance of pick-up events, providing all the details about accepted materials, the date and time of pick-up, and where to go for more information. Once again the bright and playful brand functions effectively as being approachable, playful, professional, and highly visible.

Brand Style Guide

To support the ongoing development of communication materials in-house by the Zero Waste Silicon Valley staff, Covive prepared a brand style guide detailing font and color specifications, logo use, and sample applications. Program staff have successfully applied the brand in developing their own materials including social media campaigns, videos, signs, and flyers.
