Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

Interpretive Center

Covive was invited to join The Acorn Group team to design a new interpretive center at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve for the Bolsa Chica Conservancy. Located near Huntington Beach, California, this wetlands ecosystem survived decades of oil drilling and suburban development. As a result of the tireless efforts of vocal advocates working to protect this dynamic habitat, the site is a success story of preservation, restoration, and education; and it's a spectacular location for birdwatching.

Exhibit Panels

Without existing brand guidelines or graphic styles, Covive was free to select font families, create a color palette, and introduce other design elements. A palette of dark browns and blues allowed for reversed white type and bright contrasting color accents. While the layout of each panel was adapted to its unique content, consistent headline placement and a horizontal squiggle element create uniformity and cohesion. Subtle background patterns add texture, interest and sophistication, while the overall impact of the panel design allows the surrounding murals and displays to be the center of attention.

Interactive Touch Screen

A significant feature of the exhibit is a discussion of threats and opportunities within the wetlands and surrounding community. Topics such as sea level rise, noise, oil spills, development, and policy are presented in a large backlit exhibit panel which frames an interactive touch screen. Covive developed a storyboard, custom interface, visual design, content management system, and finished application to showcase videos, photo galleries, maps, action items, and ways for visitors to get involved and support the work of the Bolsa Chica Conservancy.
