from East to Zest

Sonoma Botanical Garden Citrus Exhibition

For our first project with the Sonoma Botanical Garden, Covive was enlisted to design interpretive panels and information graphics for a winter exhibition all about citrus. Based on the Garden’s focus on primarily Asian species, the exhibit was titled "from East to Zest" tracing the origins of citrus species and varieties, while providing local history and information for aspiring growers.

Interpretive Panels and Information Graphics

At the time that Covive started work on the project, the exhibition title, palette, and fonts had already been selected and developed by the in-house team. Building on the inspiration of a flowing retro motif, Covive organized text, with Spanish translations, photos, diagrams, and illustrations onto 36x24 inch graphic panels. As with any layout project, the skill comes in balancing all of the unique elements and varying word counts for each panel into a design system that looks cohesive, intentional, and content-enhancing. The Sonoma Botanical Garden exhibition team oversaw installation, which included potted plants and stunning pyramids of citrus fruit as visual centerpieces.

Two larger 60x48 wall panels present a map and family tree of the origins of citrus species. Utilizing fruit illustrations designed by the in-house team, Covive provided a refined design sophistication to unify and elevate these information graphics.
