SHIFT Climate Action Guide

Dr. Kimberly Nicholas with Project Drawdown

SHIFT, The Super High-Impact Initiative for Fixing Tomorrow, is an online guide that compiles scientific research on effective climate action, led by climate scientist Dr. Kimberly Nicholas in collaboration with Project Drawdown. While the guide initially debuted in 2025, Covive was asked to reenvision the website in 2026 to improve user experience and better highlight climate actions. Launched in June 2026, the updated site provides greater personalization, sharing, and community building.
SHIFT brand, superpower characters, and initial website were developed by Leap. Climate action icons designed by Bonnie Tran with creative direction by Chad Upham.

Website Improvements and Development

The initial website, developed by others, introduced the project identity, vibrant color palette, playful animated superpower characters, and action guide quiz workflow. Because the website was driven almost entirely by a single-page javascript workflow, some pages would get stuck, and it was not possible to save progress and return later.

When asked to reenvision the site, Covive saw an opportunity to place greater emphasis on not just the superpowers, but also the 23 climate actions, designing icon illustrations for each and presenting them in an at-a-glance overview. We also consolidated some of the page refresh steps, providing immediate answers revealed on screen for guide step questions. With a new workflow established for visitors to create an account, profiles can now be shared via personal URL or on the “Search Profiles” map. The improved workflow allows for a greater sense of orientation and control as visitors can return to update their progress.

Share Graphics and Badges

Custom icon illustrations for the 23 climate actions provide the ingredients for more visual representation of each: as unique permalink pages; in downloadable social media graphics and wallpapers; and as dynamic, shareable badges for each user profile page. This added level of interaction provides greater accountability and visibility for site visitors. Rather than simply receiving a list of actions to take, they can check actions off the list, record personal notes, and share progress in their social circles.

A dynamic counter displays the total number of participants who have taken the superpowers quiz and completed individual actions, providing a positive feedback loop to encourage even greater sharing, participation, and meaningful climate action.
